Las Vegas Plastic Surgeons Discuss Recent Breast Augmentation Popularity

Breast Augmentation Procedures Rising in Demand According to Las Vegas Plastic Surgery Practice

Las Vegas, NV — According to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation increased by 4% to over 307,000 procedures performed by plastic surgeons across the country in 2011. As the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure being performed right now, Dr. Samuel Sohn, a plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, and his partner Dr. Tracy Hankins say they have seen a similar growth in demand for the enhancement at their practice thanks to its ability to improve and restore confidence and self-esteem in women.

“Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures done nationwide for women in the United States. It may help improve appearance, restore or improve confidence and self-esteem, and may even help improve lives,” says Dr. Sohn.

At their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice, Drs. Hankins and Sohn say patients have been taking advantage of the effective procedure for many years, but with recent advancements in surgical techniques and implant technology, the numbers have continued to pour in as more and more are seeking the natural-looking results and safe performance of breast augmentation. They say the continued pursuit of refinement in silicone breast implants in Las Vegas has brought an unprecedented degree of quality and safety to the procedure, as most patients at their practice are choosing silicone gel implants for their look and feel.

“There has undoubtedly been a greater interest in the new generation of silicone gel breast implants. In our practice, 98% of our patients choose silicone due to the improved feel and natural look associated with the gel. Medical studies over the past 20 years have proven gel breast implants to be very safe, and our patients have indicated their choice for gel as shown in our statistics. Saline still remains a very safe, practical option for patients for whom cost is an issue, or if there are still other roadblocks preventing them from having a silicone gel breast implant,” says Dr. Sohn.

Along with developments in safety, efficiency, and the effectiveness of results, Drs. Hankins and Sohn say many patients are simply looking to feel more confidence in their bodies. With the growing number of opportunities in cosmetic enhancement options such as breast augmentation in Las Vegas, they say patients now have an expansive arsenal of procedures at their fingertips to combat the signs of aging and preserve the feeling of youth and vitality in their lives. Dr. Sohn says the improvements in his patients’ outlook on life are often visible immediately following their procedure.

“We see in our patients a newfound sense of self-confidence, clothes that fit better, and a renewed or refreshed outlook on life in general. The results are very rapid and noticeable with a relatively quick recovery. In addition, the safety profile of the operation is such that consistent, safe, and reproducible results can be obtained with nearly every patient that is interested in the operation,” he says.

The ASPS statistics also report cosmetic plastic surgery procedures on the whole have risen by 5% since 2010 to over 13.8 million performed. Drs. Hankins and Sohn say the future of aesthetic enhancements, particularly breast augmentation, looks incredibly promising for both patients and surgeons. Dr. Sohn says he is excited about the chance to witness firsthand the new developments in techniques and technology that will emerge in the coming years. He adds that he hopes patients will continue taking advantage of the unique benefits of plastic surgery so as to help drive the future of the field.

“We expect that implant based breast augmentation will continue to be popular. One particular area that will continue to become more popular will be the option of using your own fat to augment the breast. This procedure, for the right candidate, can allow for a modest change in breast size that is soft, natural, and permanent without the use of implants. I am also aware that there are clinical trials ongoing using large volumes of temporary fillers to act as a breast or body volumizing agent; however, more research into the safety and efficacy of this still needs to be conducted.”

As with any medical procedure, Drs. Hankins and Sohn strongly urge their patients to seek consultation from a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon before undergoing a cosmetic enhancement like breast augmentation. Through the skilled hands of a passionate and dedicated practice, they say patients can experience a positive change to their life that enhances both their appearance and confidence in themselves.

“We look forward to treating enthusiastic patients whom have done their research into the operation and the options available to them. As with any procedure, they should approach it with an open mind, but with a very real understanding of potential risks and complications. It’s our job to educate patients as to the safety and efficacy of these procedures, and to guide them through a safe operation with good surgical results.”

Plastic Surgeons in Las Vegas on Picking the Right Plastic Surgery Practice

According to the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010. At their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice, Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn say as the number and variety of procedures performed increases, choosing the right surgeon becomes even more important, whether patients are considering a surgical procedure such as breast augmentation, or nonsurgical enhancement such as BOTOX Cosmetic®.

The most recent study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that more than 9.3 million cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in 2010. Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn are board-certified plastic surgeons in Las Vegas, NV, and recently discussed the growing popularity of cosmetic procedures as more than 50% of Americans now approve of such procedures. Whether performing breast augmentation in Las Vegas, or the many nonsurgical procedures they offer, the doctors say patient safety is the most important consideration at Hankins & Sohn Plastic Surgery Associates.

Dr. Hankins says board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the first step to address when considering procedures such as a facelift or tummy tuck in Las Vegas, and across the U. S. The combination of educational requirements and the extensive examination process required by the organization is designed to promote and maintain the highest safety standards for cosmetic enhancement. “The examination and certification process through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is important to both patients and physicians. It shows an ongoing commitment to education and the maintenance of a level of care and patient safety that are up to the high standards of the ABPS and its member surgeons around the country.”

Dr. Sohn says the process of maintaining board-certification is equally important to patient safety and procedural effectiveness. He adds that addressing the simple question of whether a surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures the surgeon remains dedicated to his profession and practice. “Board certification by the ABPS and the process of maintaining this certification allows members to stay current with the latest advances and techniques in plastic surgery through ongoing education. It ensures that our patients are receiving the best care possible, from surgeons that are committed to excellence in results and safety.”

The Science of Survival

As one of the primary reconstructive surgeons offering services at Sunrise Hospital, I’ve been involved in some significant and amazing surgical efforts to help restore function, save life and limb, and provide healing after traumatic events or tumor removal.  I recently was asked to participate in a case headed by Dr. Yevgeniy Khavkin, a neuro-spine surgeon from Johns Hopkins, who now resides here in Las Vegas.  Dr. Khavkin performed a subtotal radical removal of the sacrum for a tumor that was causing debilitating pain for a young lady.  The case took over 8 hours, and involved multiple specialties who all provided their expertise to provide the best possible result.  I was asked to be involved in the case for my expertise in wound closure.  Due to the significant size of the defect, plastic surgery techniques were necessary to allow for a stable wound closure of the back.  I am happy to say that the efforts were successful; it is precisely cases such as this that provides me with a sense of gratification, knowing that we have trained and trained to provide our patients with the best in surgical care and personal attention to ensure a successful outcome.  Further details of the write-up by a local newspaper can be read here.

Look Carefully at the Qualifications of Your Surgeon!

Dr. Hankins and I take ER call at Sunrise Hospital, providing traumatic reconstructive needs to patients from across Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California. We’ve seen some interesting things over the years, but this particular case was especially distressing. You can read the article here.

The bottom line is that we as plastic surgeons have undergone rigorous training, passed multiple exams, and spent 5-6 years working 80-120 hour weeks during our residencies to have the knowledge and skill to do what we do. We haven’t just taken a weekend course, and decided that we have the right and privilege to operate on patients. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there on just what is Board Certification, and what is a Plastic Surgeon. Two questions that you can ask your surgeon to help decipher this are:

1. What are you Board Certified in, and is this sanctioned by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)?
2. What specialty did you do your residency in?

If the answers don’t make sense or if it sounds like the doctor is sidestepping your questions, I gently suggest looking elsewhere for your surgical procedure (by the way, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not sanctioned by the ABMS).  Both Dr. Hankins and I (Dr. Sohn) are Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and are Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  So please, do your research before undergoing surgery, your health and safety may depend on it!
