Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

An otoplasty refers to a reshaping of the ears, most commonly it is performed to correct prominent ears by setting them back closer to the head. This can be an issue that causes some to be self-conscious about their appearance, and can affect your or your child’s self-confidence. Correcting prominent ears can be a very rewarding surgery, providing innumerable benefits to both adults and children. It is a safe, typically straightforward, and effective procedure that provides good results.

Candidates for otoplasty range in age from 5 years up to adulthood. It is performed typically under a general anesthetic, but can be performed while awake under a local anesthetic in older children and adults. The procedures typically takes about 1-2 hours, and there are several different techniques used to help set the ears back to a correct angle, or even to reduce the overall size of the ears. The incisions are hidden behind the ear where they are not visible.

Postoperatively, a bulky dressing is placed on the head for a few days. When this is removed, there may be some swelling evident. A soft headband will be worn during the night to help protect the ears as you sleep. The patient can return to school or work in less than a week and full activity in approximately 2 weeks (including sports).
