Las Vegas, NV — According to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation increased by 4% to over 307,000 procedures performed by plastic surgeons across the country in 2011. As the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure being performed right now, Dr. Samuel Sohn, a plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, and his partner Dr. Tracy Hankins say they have seen a similar growth in demand for the enhancement at their practice thanks to its ability to improve and restore confidence and self-esteem in women.

“Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures done nationwide for women in the United States. It may help improve appearance, restore or improve confidence and self-esteem, and may even help improve lives,” says Dr. Sohn.

At their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice, Drs. Hankins and Sohn say patients have been taking advantage of the effective procedure for many years, but with recent advancements in surgical techniques and implant technology, the numbers have continued to pour in as more and more are seeking the natural-looking results and safe performance of breast augmentation. They say the continued pursuit of refinement in silicone breast implants in Las Vegas has brought an unprecedented degree of quality and safety to the procedure, as most patients at their practice are choosing silicone gel implants for their look and feel.

“There has undoubtedly been a greater interest in the new generation of silicone gel breast implants. In our practice, 98% of our patients choose silicone due to the improved feel and natural look associated with the gel. Medical studies over the past 20 years have proven gel breast implants to be very safe, and our patients have indicated their choice for gel as shown in our statistics. Saline still remains a very safe, practical option for patients for whom cost is an issue, or if there are still other roadblocks preventing them from having a silicone gel breast implant,” says Dr. Sohn.

Along with developments in safety, efficiency, and the effectiveness of results, Drs. Hankins and Sohn say many patients are simply looking to feel more confidence in their bodies. With the growing number of opportunities in cosmetic enhancement options such as breast augmentation in Las Vegas, they say patients now have an expansive arsenal of procedures at their fingertips to combat the signs of aging and preserve the feeling of youth and vitality in their lives. Dr. Sohn says the improvements in his patients’ outlook on life are often visible immediately following their procedure.

“We see in our patients a newfound sense of self-confidence, clothes that fit better, and a renewed or refreshed outlook on life in general. The results are very rapid and noticeable with a relatively quick recovery. In addition, the safety profile of the operation is such that consistent, safe, and reproducible results can be obtained with nearly every patient that is interested in the operation,” he says.

The ASPS statistics also report cosmetic plastic surgery procedures on the whole have risen by 5% since 2010 to over 13.8 million performed. Drs. Hankins and Sohn say the future of aesthetic enhancements, particularly breast augmentation, looks incredibly promising for both patients and surgeons. Dr. Sohn says he is excited about the chance to witness firsthand the new developments in techniques and technology that will emerge in the coming years. He adds that he hopes patients will continue taking advantage of the unique benefits of plastic surgery so as to help drive the future of the field.

“We expect that implant based breast augmentation will continue to be popular. One particular area that will continue to become more popular will be the option of using your own fat to augment the breast. This procedure, for the right candidate, can allow for a modest change in breast size that is soft, natural, and permanent without the use of implants. I am also aware that there are clinical trials ongoing using large volumes of temporary fillers to act as a breast or body volumizing agent; however, more research into the safety and efficacy of this still needs to be conducted.”

As with any medical procedure, Drs. Hankins and Sohn strongly urge their patients to seek consultation from a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon before undergoing a cosmetic enhancement like breast augmentation. Through the skilled hands of a passionate and dedicated practice, they say patients can experience a positive change to their life that enhances both their appearance and confidence in themselves.

“We look forward to treating enthusiastic patients whom have done their research into the operation and the options available to them. As with any procedure, they should approach it with an open mind, but with a very real understanding of potential risks and complications. It’s our job to educate patients as to the safety and efficacy of these procedures, and to guide them through a safe operation with good surgical results.”

According to a recent survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed in 2009 nationally on women ages 20 to 39, a milestone noting significant demand for plastic surgery among women of child-bearing age. As the popularity of television shows such as The Desperate Housewives and Cougar Town continues to draw aesthetic attention towards mothers, Dr. Tracy Hankins, and Dr. Samuel Sohn, board-certified plastic surgeons in Las Vegas, say cosmetic procedures will become increasingly common amongst women who have had children. Additionally, the doctors discuss the popularity of surgical procedures associated with the mommy makeover and reasons for high demand.

At their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice, Dr. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn say they have seen a significant growth in the popularity of the mommy makeover in Las Vegas. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) confirms this observation, reporting that over 325,000 procedures were performed nationally in 2009 among women ages 20-39. The ASPS statistics show that if cost were not an issue, 62% of moms say they would consider a mommy makeover. Cosmetic surgical procedures have also increased 5% overall according to the study with 13.1 million total performed in 2010.

Dr. Hankins says the most popular combinations of procedures in a mommy makeover at his practice include breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction. He adds that breast augmentation in Las Vegas has also been on the rise as more patients seek to combine the procedure with other surgical enhancements in a comprehensive mommy makeover. He says the rise in awareness of procedure combinations has caused many patients to consider the potential benefits that a mommy makeover can offer. “Increases in patient awareness on the variety of techniques available to rejuvenate the body after pregnancy has directly increased the popularity of the mommy makeover. By combining surgical procedures, in just a few short hours, patients can regain their youthful contours and shape in a safe and effective manner.”

For many women who have had children, Dr. Hankins says achieving a confident and proportional figure is a difficult goal to attain, even for those who have time to exercise regularly. He adds that a mommy makeover procedure can restore their bodies to the sleeker, more youthful shape they enjoyed before the effects of childbirth caused skin to sag and droop. Dr. Hankins also says many of his patients are simply looking to regain the self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life through cosmetic enhancement such as liposuction in Las Vegas.

Regardless of whether patients choose to combine breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, or tummy tuck, Dr. Sohn says mommy makeovers can provide patients with a rejuvenated sense of motherhood by allowing them to be proud of their body and their children. “Mommy makeovers help our patients feel confident and comfortable with their bodies again, after the changes that childbirth and breastfeeding can cause. The good news to all moms out there, is that there is hope, and there is a way, through safe and proven techniques of plastic surgery to help make things oftentimes better than they were before their pregnancy.”

Dr. Hankins and I are proud to announce the incoming delivery of the Zeltiq CoolSculpting device sometime in August to our Pecos location in Henderson, also serving Las Vegas! Now there’s a way to experience clinically proven, noninvasive therapy for fat reduction – no surgery needed (for the right candidate). Here’s an excerpt from their website:

The cool solution.

It’s called stubborn fat on purpose. Because no matter how much pain you put into eating healthy and exercise, there’s no gain. It’s virtually impossible to lose that muffin top and those love handles. You’re forced to just live with them or think surgery. Which is not cool by us, and exactly why we developed CoolSculpting®.

Here’s the skinny: developed by Harvard scientists, our unique, patented, clinically proven procedure involves freezing fat cells without damage to your skin. There’s no knife. No suction hoses. No needles. No lasers, even. After your treatment, you get on with your busy day.

On average, you’ll see a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. You can lose even more with additional appointments, if you and your doctor deem necessary. What does that mean? Simply put, your clothes fit better. You look better. The fat cells are naturally eliminated from your body over the following few months, leaving you feeling more like yourself again. It’s totally non-invasive, FDA-cleared, and there’s usually no downtime whatsoever — unless you count reading a book or checking email during your appointment as downtime. How cool is that? And what’s more is there are no pills or supplements and as long as you maintain your weight with normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable. Hello, you again.

According to the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010. At their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice, Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn say as the number and variety of procedures performed increases, choosing the right surgeon becomes even more important, whether patients are considering a surgical procedure such as breast augmentation, or nonsurgical enhancement such as BOTOX Cosmetic®.

The most recent study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that more than 9.3 million cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in 2010. Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn are board-certified plastic surgeons in Las Vegas, NV, and recently discussed the growing popularity of cosmetic procedures as more than 50% of Americans now approve of such procedures. Whether performing breast augmentation in Las Vegas, or the many nonsurgical procedures they offer, the doctors say patient safety is the most important consideration at Hankins & Sohn Plastic Surgery Associates.

Dr. Hankins says board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the first step to address when considering procedures such as a facelift or tummy tuck in Las Vegas, and across the U. S. The combination of educational requirements and the extensive examination process required by the organization is designed to promote and maintain the highest safety standards for cosmetic enhancement. “The examination and certification process through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is important to both patients and physicians. It shows an ongoing commitment to education and the maintenance of a level of care and patient safety that are up to the high standards of the ABPS and its member surgeons around the country.”

Dr. Sohn says the process of maintaining board-certification is equally important to patient safety and procedural effectiveness. He adds that addressing the simple question of whether a surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures the surgeon remains dedicated to his profession and practice. “Board certification by the ABPS and the process of maintaining this certification allows members to stay current with the latest advances and techniques in plastic surgery through ongoing education. It ensures that our patients are receiving the best care possible, from surgeons that are committed to excellence in results and safety.”

As board-certified plastic surgeons in Las Vegas, Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn embrace the use of social media sites because they believe online communities such as Facebook can enhance a patients’ online experience with their practice. As patients consider cosmetic surgery and begin to research the process, the doctors say they urge all potential patients to join their current patients online to learn more about the spectrum of procedures they offer, ranging from breast augmentation to BOTOX Cosmetic®, liposuction to its noninvasive alternative, SmartLipo™.

Hankins and Sohn Plastic Surgery Associates is a Las Vegas plastic surgery group practice with over two decades of combined expertise and experience. Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel Sohn say they believe cosmetic plastic surgery provides patients with an opportunity to improve their overall lifestyle, which is why creating a positive experience is extremely important to the success of their practice. The doctors add that Facebook and the social media community surrounding their practice enhances their ability to achieve such an experience with each patient, whether they are considering surgical procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction, or a minimally invasive enhancement with BOTOX injections® or dermal fillers.

Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say sites such as Facebook play an influential role in their practice’s virtual representation because they provide a venue for patients both new and existing to interact. As curious patients join the community to learn more about a particular procedure, or current patients return to provide feedback concerning their recent transformation with a procedure such as a tummy tuck or butt lift, the doctors say they fully embrace the use of social media because of its ability to inform and educate.

As their practice philosophy focuses on their patients’ desired lifestyle change and overall satisfaction with their cosmetic enhancement experience, Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say, next to the initial consultation, the interaction that occurs on social media sites provides an invaluable resource for any patient. When the doctors consider the latest data concerning time spent on Facebook alone, which amounts to 700 billion minutes each month, they say they are not surprised. “We are pleased with the response we’ve had on Facebook and the internet via social media in providing new and innovative information for our clientele. This interaction adds an additional layer of open communication with our patients, which helps to educate and empower them to be proactive about their plastic surgery wants and needs.”

Following a 14-year moratorium, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration re-approved silicone breast implants for use in breast augmentation. This November is the fourth anniversary of the FDA lifting the ban after extensive tests were conducted concerning the safety of silicone implants in the human body. Las Vegas plastic surgeons Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn recently discussed the moratorium, and the difference between saline and silicone breast implants, as well as the need to first address each patient’s cosmetic enhancement goals and expectations.

In this month’s online version of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a preliminary publication of a study from Sweden involving Macrolane, an injectable hyaluronic gel from Q-Med (the manufacturers of Restylane), injected into the breasts for cosmetic augmentation. The product is available in Europe, but not in the U.S. as of yet. In Europe, the product has been used for body contouring applications, hence the term ‘boob jab’, for the injection of Macrolane into the breast.

The study focused on 24 women over a period of a year, who had Macrolane injected into their breasts, up to 100cc per side, in a subglandular position under local anesthesia. As Macrolane is gradually broken down and absorbed, it was expected that the results would change over time. At 6 months post-injection 83% were pleased with the improvement, and at 12 months 69% were still considered improved. There were no major complications or systemic issues, but capsular contracture around the Macrolane was still the most common reported adverse effect, with 25% of the women reporting undesirable firmness around the breast.

The bottom line for patients in the U.S., is that the gel needs further study, and may be an option for women in the future (after FDA approval) that want a non-surgical augmentation with mild to moderate improvement in breast volume. However, the 25% reported incidence of capsular contracture is disturbing, significantly higher than rates seen with saline or silicone breast implants. Read the full article here.

The FDA today approved Botox Therapeutic for use in treatment for chronic migraines; Botox is already approved for treatment of crossed eyes, neck muscle spasms, overactive sweating, and stiffness associated with muscle spasms in the hand and elbows, as well as the Botox Cosmetic wrinkle reduction that we all know and love. See the link to the NY Times article here. Chronic migraines are those that occur more than 14 days out of each month. Botox has not been shown to work effectively for the treatment of episodic migraine headaches, or for other forms of headache. The treatments are performed every 12 weeks. For those that suffer from the pain, light sensitivity, and nausea associated with chronic migraines, another treatment option may provide good relief. Less wrinkles are also a plus!

As one of the primary reconstructive surgeons offering services at Sunrise Hospital, I’ve been involved in some significant and amazing surgical efforts to help restore function, save life and limb, and provide healing after traumatic events or tumor removal. I recently was asked to participate in a case headed by Dr. Yevgeniy Khavkin, a neuro-spine surgeon from Johns Hopkins, who now resides here in Las Vegas. Dr. Khavkin performed a subtotal radical removal of the sacrum for a tumor that was causing debilitating pain for a young lady. The case took over 8 hours, and involved multiple specialties who all provided their expertise to provide the best possible result. I was asked to be involved in the case for my expertise in wound closure. Due to the significant size of the defect, plastic surgery techniques were necessary to allow for a stable wound closure of the back. I am happy to say that the efforts were successful; it is precisely cases such as this that provides me with a sense of gratification, knowing that we have trained and trained to provide our patients with the best in surgical care and personal attention to ensure a successful outcome. Further details of the write-up by a local newspaper can be read here.
