Gender-Affirming Surgery

Living in a body that feels foreign is an indescribably difficult and uncomfortable situation for many reasons. Fortunately, the latest surgical techniques and technology have made gender transition easier than ever before. Our experienced, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons, Dr. W. Tracy Hankins and Dr. Samuel M. Sohn offer male-to-female (MTF) breast surgery, also known at “MTF Top Surgery” and “Transgender Breast Augmentation,” to help patients modify their physical body to better match their authentic gender identity1. If you’re considering this procedure, our compassionate and knowledgeable medical team will help you determine the best course of action based on your needs and goals. We also offer a welcoming, friendly, and comfortable environment designed to make you feel at ease.

MTF Breast Augmentation Procedure

Male-to-female breast surgery is very similar to a typical breast augmentation. In this procedure, breast implants can be inserted through an incision and placed in front of or behind the chest muscle, helping to create a beautiful, feminine shape. Innovative implant options make it possible to achieve a natural-looking and feeling result, and you can learn more about your options on our Breast Implants page. You also have a selection of incision options, including the inframammary (under the fold of what will be your breast) and periareolar (around the pigmented area surrounding the nipple). While we do not require hormone therapy for patients undergoing MTF Top Surgery, it can, in addition to your procedure, provide the most natural looking results2. Drs. Hankins and Sohn will discuss your choices with you during your initial consultation and assist you in making the ideal decision.

Benefits of MTF Top Surgery

MTF Top Surgery is a gender-affirming breast augmentation for transgender women, and can have the following benefits:

  • Can greatly improve quality of life
  • Can reduce distress associated with the disparity between the gender assigned-at-birth and gender expression3
  • Can reduce or alleviate gender dysphoria
  • Allows patients feel more comfortable in their bodies
  • Improves self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Enhances the overall appearance of the breasts
  • Increases the size, shape, and projection of the breasts

MTF Breast Augmentation Recovery

An outpatient procedure, gender affirming breast surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. You should be able to return home the same day after the surgery. Most patients spend about a week or two away from routine activities while they heal. Swelling, tenderness, bruising, and some discomfort is normal, and we will provide prescription medication to help you manage the pain. You should avoid lifting any objects five pounds or heavier for the first two weeks, and you should avoid strenuous exercise and activity for at least a month. Swelling should dramatically subside after a few months, although some residual inflammation will continue for a while. Final results typically will be visible after about a year.

Other Gender-Affirming Procedures

For some individuals, breast surgery is the only procedure they wish to have; for others, it’s only one small part of the transition process. Other aesthetic techniques that may be able to help you achieve a more “feminine” form include body contouring treatments, fat injections, and Brazilian butt lift. Non-surgical enhancements like cosmetic injectables and laser hair removal may also be useful. Let us know what your desired outcome is and we can provide suggestions that can help you look and feel more like you. We want to help each patient feel more confident and comfortable in their skin.
